Two Australian soldiers in the snow, training camp England
Subject
Military Uniforms; World War 1/
Description
A black and white photograph featuring two Australian Soldiers in the snow;
From an album owned by Staff Sergeant-Major Arthur George Bennett winter 1916. The man standing on the left is Sergeant-Bennett from the 4th Pioneers.
In training camp in England, it was easy to enjoy a snowball fight. Snow in the trenches was much less fun. The combination of cold and wet led to many injuries and illnesses that removed men from the fighting. Cold weather gear, especially socks and boots, gloves, and hats, were regularly redesigned in many armed forces, informed by new science and the experiences of soldiers in the last war fought.
